How to make mash for the first feeding

Your baby is already ready to try something new, when he no longer eats up with his usual mother’s milk or mixture, if he is interested in your food, he can grab a piece and put it in his mouth. This usually occurs between about 5 and 9 months of life. So, it's time to acquaint the child with vegetables. And for this you need to learn how to cook vegetable puree for the first feeding yourself or choose the right one, when to give it and what to expect from this innovation.

Lure - when to start

There comes a time when the baby is not enough mother's milk or mixture. He does not get enough, he becomes restless, does not gain weight. At this point, it is worth starting to introduce additional products. As a rule, this time falls on infants at 6 months, and in artificial children - at 4. There are exceptions when the baby’s condition worsens and, on the advice of the doctor, the mother will have to introduce supplemental foods before the generally accepted deadlines. It is necessary to know that up to a year, finished products are introduced into the baby’s diet, and not raw. And the first dish should be puree, and it is necessary that he had a homogeneous mass, and as part of only one product. It is important that the puree is not much different in its consistency from the mother's milk or milk formula. This is necessary in order for the crumbs to be easier to move from one type of product to another. Over time, you can do thicker.

The first vegetable puree: when and what to give

In the issue of complementary foods - the timing of its beginning and the choice of ingredient - specialists in baby food do not have a common opinion. Much depends on the state of health of each infant, the individual rates of its development and the way of feeding.

If the baby eats breast milk, up to half a year he needs nothing more. And after six months, mother's milk alone is not enough to provide the developing organism of the infant with all the important substances. Then comes the "finest hour" vegetable puree. By this time, the incompletely developed digestive system is already able to cope with the new product without the risk of gas formation or diarrhea. For formula-fed babies, the most appropriate time is 4 or 4.5 months old.

By the way, the actual period of introduction of vegetable foods in different parts of the world is different: in Europe, for example, it occurs at 3-4 months of infants. In particular, the German pediatricians do not conceal that the purpose of these activities is gradual persistent weaning of the child from the breast at an earlier date, mainly for the fact that the mother can return to work as soon as possible.

Complementary feeding scheme

From the very beginning, vegetable puree should be an independent meal - breakfast or lunch. Vegetables will become a side dish only when meat and fish appear in your child’s diet.
So, a new dish should be included in the children's menu gradually, almost imperceptibly. When you feed vegetable food in a lure, the feeding pattern can be like this.

  1. Start in the morning with 1/2 tsp, then feed the baby with breast milk / formula. Every day, double the volume and bring up to 50-100 ml, if the baby’s well-being, the nature of the chair has not changed.
  2. If the baby does not want to eat anymore, do not insist - immediately offer him the usual diet (breast milk, formula).
  3. There was a negative reaction (redness / rash / pruritus, diarrhea / constipation, abdominal pain) - cancel the product, wait until the symptoms disappear and try another.
  4. There was a reaction to the increased amount of the product, which was previously perceived as normal? Stop for a couple of days, and then go back to the previous volume of food.
  5. After the first week (with the normal state of health of the child) completely replace the vegetables with one feeding. Over the next seven days will adapt to the new food.
  6. How to add vegetables to the food: add each type to the food one at a time, after 7 days (it is easier to track the possible reaction and understand what exactly it originated; it is recommended to keep records - date, type of food, dosage, reaction).
